In history, there were mostly vibrant colors before the 17th century. Colors were hard to get, hard to produce and therefore expensive. In the 17th century in Italy, men in court and other serious jobs at the time, took to black to express their status. As Italy is famous for exquisite fabrics, the color black was then produced on expensive fabrics, like thin wool. Till this day, wearing black can be a sign of power.

However, black has become much more commercial and also practical as it is used in many jobs within a service sector, like gastronomie for example. So, black got less snobby and more approachable. The approachable aspect was also in Coco Chanel’s mind when she debuted the Little Black Dress in 1926. It was described as “Chanel’s Ford” by Vogue at the time. It was supposed to be something for everyone. Something that meets the needs of the masses.

But after all, black kept its elegance. It’s timeless while modern, elegant while practical, mysterious while intentional. And it’s so fun to style. To style it well, I recommend going for different, unique fabrics to really bring out the color, and adding jewelry. Black is the perfect canvas to really make your metals shine.
