I’ve been working out on a regular bases most of life. From team and school sports to gym and yoga classes. In conclusion, it’s fair to say, that working out always feels great … afterwards. But because there is more to it than staying in shape, my workout routine has become quite the important part in weekly routine.

A few tips from my end would be that everyone can find their sweet spots in the diverse variety or offers of workouts. From team sports to individual training and from cardio to Pilates to weights. Likewise, everyone can fit some sort of work out routine into their life. The challenge is to make it a habit and to prioritize it like a doctor’s appointment, a work meeting, or an evening with friends.

To do so, I stick to a certain amount of times a week. Others stick to certain days or commit to a regular class right away. Another important point is to figure out what time of day is doable and manageable, in terms of timing and what works for your body best. For example, friends of mine use the days when their work from home and include a quick YouTube home workout video into their lunch break. To makes things easy for your personal needs, I would start with the following checklist.

Checklist to ease into your New Year’s resolution

What kind of sport do I actually like?

Use the first month of the year to find a workout that you really like. For example: Sign up for a test month at the gym, do a machine instruction and try working out by yourself. At the same time join a Yoga / Pilates / Dance class to see if a class or group style workout speaks more to you. At the end of the month, commit to the one workout you enjoyed the most.

What time works for my schedule?

Especially in the beginning it’s important that working out fits into your current schedule. If you have to make extra time right away, it’s a challenge on top of a challenge. Besides that, it should be schedules at a time when your body feels it best. So try an early morning workout, an evening workout, and a weekend workout for comparison

What’s realistic?

If you did the first two steps, you will have a good idea on what you like and when you can do it by the end of January. The next step is setting a realistic ambition, like one, two, three times a week. This number should be realistic, you can always put in more hours in the future. Don’t rely on a workout friend (only), but become accountable to reaching that number yourself.

What motivates you?

Make a decision on what motivates you. That can be a sort of treat you will get for yourself after sticking to the routine for six months. Others prefer a more direct motivation like a chic gym with a Sauna. Whatever it is, make sure you’re aware and think of it when struggling.

Weather you start working out or just pick up where you left of, every workout begins with getting ready. Pick an outfit that makes you feel great and puts you in the right mood. Weather you’re a classic, elegant, casual, or playful athlete.
