Weather you‘re having an Indian summer or an early case of fall weather, there is something magical of the first breeze. It marks the end of summer and the beginning of the cozy yet colder months. The days get shorter and the outfits slowly but surely get longer. But while it‘s still warm and sunny during the day, the evenings are getting a little chill and call for the first layering pieces of the season.
While we spend most of time between May and September in simpler outfits, cozy or sexy, we start to truly layer, style, and accessorize when the weather drops. And just before that actual drop we can already almost feel the nearing breeze. We grab layering pieces to keep us cozy and slightly covered during the evening while we‘re still in our summer looks. So this calls for transitional pieces that can take you from that exact moment to the first autumnal styles. It requires the pieces to be versatile and literally jump styles. Let‘s search our wardrobes and the department stores for what might work.
Classic layering pieces
A classic layering pieces seems to fulfill plenty of requirements at once: be timeless, versatile for styling and color options, and a good stapling piece for all sorts of occasions. So I suggest a clean crisp button down. Made of cotton, not linen, so function as a layering piece underneath knits during fall and winter.

Winter look: Bally Cardigan / Tod’s loafers / Lou Lou Studio pants / Saint Laurent bag (all linked)
Elegant layering pieces
For an elegant layering piece choose a fine knit. Preferably a thin yet good quality that is breathable like mohair or cashmere which you can add as a little jacket during summer and wear as a shirt during fall.

Winter look: Joseph jacket and pants / Lou Lou Studio pants / Etro silk scarf / Le Monde Beryl ballet flats (all linked)
Casual layering pieces
To end summer and kick off fall on a casual note, grab a long sleeve or light hoodie. They’ll look cute with shorts and can be worn throughout fall in simple looks with jeans and parkers.

Playful layering pieces
Transfer your denim look from summer to fall by switching out just some of the pieces but keep its playful essence.
