Mules: the shoe of the season

Half shoe, half slide. There is something so nonchalant about mules, it’s hard to put in words. But let’s try to put them in outfits and style them classic, elegant, casual and playful.

Flat or heeled, boyish or sexy, mules promise an effortless coolness with an ‘i-just-put-these-on-and-stepped-outside’-vibe which is what I am all about. And because there is less material, there is more room for styling.

For colder seasons, I like to play with wool socks and different pant lengths, while during summer, mules can add a pop of color or sparkle to dresses, skirt, shorts, or linen pants that completely elevates your outfit. As we are in the transitional season right now, styling options for mules feel endless. My shoe wardrobe is having its high season – just like the mule itself.

I am guessing it was around 2015, when the Gucci loafer mule started it all. Since then, we’ve seen extremely fashionable designs, especially over the last seasons, like the J.W. Anderson embellished leather mule with the golden chain, Ugg mules or heeled mule versions in plastic, crystallized, wooded heels from Saint Laurent and many more. Likewise, Birkenstocks – especially the model ‘Boston’ – have never been as much in fashion as they’ve been for the last few years. And one’s to wait how one of the fashion motherships, powerhouse LVMH, is going to push Birkenstock’s style evolution, now that they’ve purchased the former German family company which originally introduced the shoes as medical foot support.

After years and years of sneakers, which is a trend that is obviously and for good reason not going anywhere, the comfy mule might give them a run for their money. In the fashion world, at least. As the lover of mules and effortless styles that I am, I am curious what the next cold and warm seasons will have to offer in the mule department, but as of now, let’s take a look at ways to style them and what mules are out there.

Classic mules

The classic mules elevate outfits for every occasion. From day to night, from the office to dinner – these forever pieces are trusty wardrobe staples. Combine them with a COS cashmere cardigan, The Frankie Shop Bea Pants, the Tôteme Monogram shirt, and a JW Anderson bag for a classic, chic, and modern look.

Elegant mules

Heeled mules promise effortless elegance and a pinch of attitude. For a chic combination, style them with a clean look. The Nanaushka Valerie bag in combination with an Emporio Armani shirt, an Arket skirt, and a House of Dagmar coat will make an elegant look. Add some silver jewelry if you want to sparkle.

Casual mules

Casual mules scream Sunday, coffee, and brunch. The shoes of the season make an elevated off duty look and are perfect for strolls in the city. Besides the probably most fitting accessories – a coffee mug, a newspaper, or a book – there a plenty of options for a cozy combination. Wear them with Isabel Marant Jeans, the Tôteme wool-blend scarf jacket, an Uniqlo wool turtleneck, and Paco Rabanne earrings. And check for cashmere socks for some extra coziness!
