Although ‚Gilmore Girls‘ first aired more then two decades ago, it remains having an annual come back every fall. And for good reason: The topic of female bonds will forever be up to date. The witty jokes from the script were always referencing authors or movies classics and with that, have remained timeless. And this year, its scenes and its fashion have become inside jokes and fashion influence among the series fan base. Gilmore Girls fashion is like the series itself – girly, fun, casual, and simply right for fall.
The scenery of a small, neighborly town in Connecticut, with people drinking hot beverages, having town meetings, simply screams fall. It was makes the series so moody and cozy. And the fact that the main characters Lorelei and Rory enjoy movie nights, books, and comfort food surely adds a fair amount to that exact coziness we all want to indulge in ourselves during fall. With the Friday nights dinners at Rory‘s grandparents Emily and Richard the festiveness we feel rising when entering the colder time of the year is added into the mix perfectly – and for sure the family drama everyone has at least experienced once during the holidays. So the concept is a winning one. And the fashion? The Gilmore Girls fashion is approachable, very real for its time, and underlines the characters. As fashion should do.
Timeless: Lorelei Gilmore
Although Lorelai‘s style is very true to the period in time when Gilmore Girls was filmed, it remains timeless. Think Monica from friends or Buffy the Vampire slayer. What do all these characters have in common? They wear bootcut pants or mini skirts, leather jackets, turtlenecks, and block heel boots. So it comes down to very classic pieces which are only defined as 2000s style by little details. So start with a slightly fitted leather jacket from Saint Laurent and bootcut jeans from Frame. Add a cashmere sweater from Extreme Cashmere and classic ankle boots from Saint Laurent. Add your favorite jewelry and a shoulder bag. For the true 2000s and Lorelai spirit, this could be silver hoops or a beaded bracelet and a smooth simple shoulderbag.
Elegant: Emily Gilmore
Of curse Emily means old money. She’s the lady of the house, well educated, well integrated in the society and her cycle, and sure of her taste. And her style reflects that by never being too flashy, experimental, or trendy. It‘s quiet the opposite actually. She mostly wear two pieces with skirts, twin sets, blouses, and of course, always tights. Dressing like Emily means having some sort of uniform with different twists, depending on the occasion. Start with a burgundy ensemble and tweet jacket from Sandro and add a cross-body bag from Soeur. Wear the look with brown tights in 20den and depending on your preference with pumps, slingbacks, ballet flats, or even loafers.
Casual: Rory Gilmore
Rory is a classic teenage girl the beginning and grows into a college student throughout the show. So whenever we don‘t see her in her school uniform or in formal wear for Ivy League occasions, we can spot her real style. And is casual and underlines her book-loving, friend-loving, home-loving, and school-loving nature. Although she picks up a few boots or blazers in her later years, her true style always stays on the casual side. She’s most seen in sloughy sweaters and jeans. So that‘s exactly how to start the casual Rory style: a Khaite knit and Citizens of humanity jeans.Style it with a tote bag from Saint Laurent that holds books and other things for school or college.
Playful: The 2000s
While Lorelai, Rory, Emily, and the man in their lives are for sure the main story line, the series could exist without the strong female friends next to them. They not only have their own destinies, stories, and struggles that make them real, they also add deep meaning to female bonds outside of families.
So just like them, a little something of their outfits and of the 2000s needs to be included to make this blog complete: (1) Raver shirt from Dion Lee (2) Grungy workwear jacket from Sandro (3) romantic crochet headband from Miu Miu
